Medical Self-Care



Research shows that people provide their own illness care between 80 and 98% of the time. (The difference in the figures cited simply reflects varying definitions of illness.) In one recent survey, people were asked to list all the health problems they'd experienced within the preceding two weeks. The average turned out to be 4.5—which works out to 117 health problems per person per year! But the average individual goes to a doctor only two to three times a year. And the percentage of preventive care that is self-provided probably runs close to 99%.

    When you become a coach, it is your duty to serve as many clients as possible (without stretching yourself). But here is the thing, you cannot dilute your message to your clients because everything that you say is going to affect their lives in a very organic way. That very reason is why one-on-one coaching is now obsolete. As you scale up, you simply won’t have the time you need to take care of all your clients personally. So what do you do about that?     HI, Does anyone have any recommendation for books about self care whilst working in mental health services? I can find some books about general stress at work but nothing particularly about those working in mental health (maybe the books I'm imagining to exist don't exist!). Or any general reading / books you would recommend around the topics of self care, resilience, stress, work /life balance etc. that you've found useful working in psychology services?     This category is all about what I call the three "S" solution. The three S's are 1) self-esteem, 2) self-confidence, and 3) self-image. IMAGINE what your life would be like if you these three S's were in your corner! Now, don't get me wrong. I'm not suggesting you have NO self-confidence or that your self-image is bad. Let's be honest though, in my profession I work with a great many people who struggle with a very wide range of issues and it was a shock for me to discover how many of them have a deficit in at least one of these 3 areas. Low self-esteem and low self-confidence plagued my life up through early adulthood. I eventually found ways to turn these weaknesses into strengths but too many people never do. These issues can devastate your life in so many ways. To complicate matters, the things that damage our mental and emotional well being are usually happening when we are in our formative years and too young to know how to protect ourselves. You might want to check out an article that discusses low self-esteem in children and teenagers. Naturally, we all know that teenagers grow up to become, well... US! You can follow the link to the article at the bottom of this post but there were some sobering facts cited there. A few really stuck in my mind: People who suffer with low-self-esteem are (or can be): ~ More troubled by failure ~ Tend to interpret non-critical comments as critical ~ Struggle with social interactions ~ Find more difficulty expressing themselves ~ At greater risk of teen pregnancy ~ Insecure, shy, quiet ~ Angry, hostile ~ Underachievers ~ Unmotivated ~ Unhappy Based on my own personal experience with the many problems caused by low self-esteem and everything I have learned as a coach and counselor, suffice it to say that repairing and rebuilding the three 'S's' will net you truly wonderful results! You will be empowered to be so much more than you ever thought possible. It doesn't matter whether you do this on your own or enlist the help of someone like me, the important thing is what Nike is famous for saying, JUST DO IT! Citation: McLeod, S. A. (2012).
